Henry N. Wilkinson was born on 14 December 1815 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Wilkinson and Jane Williams.1 Henry N. Wilkinson married Eleanor G. (?) circa 1839.3
Henry N. Wilkinson was listed as the head of a household on the census of 1840 Richland County, Ohio. His household consisted of 1 free white male aged 30-40, 1 free white female aged 15-20 and 1 aged 20-30, and 1 free colored person aged 10-24.4 He died on 12 August 1903 at Millville, Shasta County, California, at age 87.1,2 His obituary appeared in the 13 August 1903 issue of The Free Press, Redding, Shasta County, California. The obituary headlines read:
Death Claims one of Shasta's Old Pioneers. H. N. Wilkinson, Wealthy Landowner, Answers to the Final Call. Death of an Old and Respected Resident of the East Side, Who Has Lived on One Farm for Nearly Half a Century.--Funeral Friday.
The text reads:
"Henry N. Wilkinson, one of Shasta county's most prominent citizens, died at his home on the Wilkinson farm, ten miles east of Millville, at 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The cause of his death was a gradual breaking down of the system caused by old age. Six months ago he was taken with sinking spells and he continued to grow weaker until death relieved him of his suffering.
Henry N. Wilkinson was a pioneer of Shasta county, having arrived at French Gulch in the year 1850. He remained there until 1854, when he moved to the ranch near Millville on which he has lived continuously.
Mr. Wilkinson was a native of Pennsylvania and was 88 years of age. When he was 24 years of age he married. His wife died on December 25, 1899. When he was a young man he taught school in Indiana. After arriving at French Gulch he conducted a hotel until he moved to his home near Millville.
In 1861 he started a flouring mill at Millville and in 1864 entered into partnership with H. F. Ross, father of A. F. Ross of this city. Mr. Ross died two years ago. They conducted the flour mill for a number of years and abandoned it, but continued in partnership in the stock and land business until Mr. Ross' death. In fact, the partnership never has been dissolved.
Mr. Wilkinson was considered one of the wealthiest men in Shasta county. The value of his estate is estimated all the way from $10,000 to $500,000. He owned much valuable real estate and also held bonds in the sum of several thousands of dollars.
He left a will, but who the beneficiaries are is not known at present. He has several nieces and nephews living in the East and it is believed a considerable portion of the estate will become theirs.
For many years John Q. Tracy and wife have lived with Mr. Wilkinson on his farm and John S. Tracy has acted as manager of Mr. Wilkinson's place. It is thought by many that the Tracys will fall heir to some of the property and A. F. Ross, whom Mr. Wilkinson always held in the highest esteem, may be mentioned in the dead man's will.
The funeral will take place Friday morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be in the cemetery at Millville.3
