Nicholas Gaylard1

M, d. between 25 March 1546 and 8 April 1546
Nicholas Gaylard is said by some sources to be an immigrant from France, but there is no evidence that this is so. In fact the surname Gaylord (or a variation of) has been traced in a custumal of Taunton Deane manor of circa 1250. That entry shows one Adam Gaillard as holding a messuage for a rent of 3d a year in the tithing of Extra Portam.2,3 He married Johanna Sevenocke, daughter of John Sevenocke, between 1527 and 1530 at Somerset, England; Records show that Johanna with Nicholas Gaylard paid 3s 4d to attract the rest of the lands of said Johanna, viz., 2 messuages and 2 ferlings of bondland, formerly of Thomas Roke, and 4 acres of overland called Lakmede and Smalecroft in the same tithing, heriot [lost], price 20s. In 1530/31 2s was received from John Sevenock, serf of the lord, for that Nicholas Gaillard granted to Johanna, wife of the same (Nicholas and daughter) of the said John, a certain corrody issuing from 2 messuages and 2 ferlings of bondland (in the tithing of) Southtrendle.4,5

Nicholas Gaylard left a will on 25 March 1546 at Pitminster, Somerset, England.4,6 He died between 25 March 1546 and 8 April 1546 at Pitminster, Somerset, England.4 His estate was probated on 8 April 1546 at Somerset, England.4,6
