Col James Smallwood was born in 1639.2 He was the son of Matthew Smallwood.2 On 28 July 1663 at Charles County, Maryland, James Smallwood testified in court regarding a suit between Mr. Arthur Turner and James Boulin concerning two pigs which were to be delivered to him.3 Col James Smallwood immigrated to Maryland in 1664.4 He married Hester (?) in 1665. On 14 February 1670 an indenture was made from James Smallwood to William Jenkins, planter at Charles County, Maryland. The indenture was for a parcel called Goates Lodge, laid out for 150 acres and the price was 5,000 pounds of tobacco.5 On 5 March 1677 an indenture was made from John Duglas, Gent. To James Smallwood at Charles County, Maryland. The indenture was for a parcel of 200 acres and was called Welcome. He paid 7,500 pounds of tobacco for the land.5
A cow and mare were given as a deed of gift from James Smallwood to his daughter, Mary Maddocks on 16 March 1685/86 at Charles County, Maryland.6 On 20 April 1687 an indenture was made from Edmond Lindsey to James Smallwood at Charles County, Maryland. It was for 300 acres of land called Mayday and cost 2,100 pounds of tobacco.5 On 27 May 1688 an indenture was made from Cornelius Maddock, merchant, and Mary his wife, to James Smallwood at Charles County, Maryland. It was for a tract of land called Nuthall which was bounded by Merdillal, the land of Robert Shaw, and land formerly surveyed for Edmond Lindsey now in possession of James Smallwood. It contained 60 acres and was purchased for 3,000 pounds of tobacco.5 On 13 August 1694 an indenture was made from William Griffin to James Smallwood Sr. at Charles County, Maryland. The indenture was for a parcel of 113 acres of land called The Hills which bounded James' land called Porke Hall. He paid 10,000 pounds of tobacco for the land.6 He married Mary Thompson in 1695.2 Col James Smallwood died in 1714 at Prince George County, Maryland.2
