He joined in the contract on the noted date and faithfully kept it.1 He married Mary Deming, daughter of John Deming and Honour Treat, on 15 December 1670 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.5,1,6,7 John Hurlbut was made a freeman in 1671 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.1 On 24 October 1671 John Hurlbut was received into membership of the Church. The record reads: "Beeing the Lord's Day, John Hollibut was received a member of this Church in ye state of Innitiation plighting the Covenant and consenting to sho confession of faith before ye Church. His child likewise by name, John, ye same day received the Innitiatory Seal of ye Covenant Baptism." The First Congregational Church, Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.8 In 1673 John Hurlbut owned land at Eastbury, Connecticut; Tax of 5s 4d.4 He died on 30 August 1690 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at age 48; Town records say he d. 30 Apr 1690 but Probate Court Records give the August date. Source 141 says those records are probably more reliable than the town ones.9,1 The inventory of his estate was taken on 9 September 1690 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut; His widow, Mary, and Capt. Nathaniel White were appointed to minister to the estate. Since there was one child yet unborn the court ordered that "there shall be no distribution now made."1 His estate was probated on 19 June 1696 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut; The estate was distributed.1

Thomas Hurlbut1

M, b. 26 March 1610, d. after 12 October 1671
Thomas Hurlbut was born on 26 March 1610 at Wiltshire, England, according to some sources. However, I've been unable to find any record of his birth or baptism.1 He immigrated in 1635 to Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut; It is supposed he came in this year for he was a soldier under Lion Gardiner, who built and had command of the fort at Saybrook. Lion Gardiner, it is said, was an Englishman, and by profession an Engineer, and had been in Holland in the service of the Prince of Orange, but was engaged by the proprietors of the Connecticut Patenet, issued by Charles II to Lord Say and Sel, Lord Brooks and others, granting a large tract of territory on the banks of the Connecticut River, to erect a fortification at its mouth.

Judge Savage said Gardiner embarked at London in the Bachilor, of only 25 tons, 11 Aug 1635 with his wife, female servant, and 11 male passengers, and arrived in Boston the 28th of the following November. It is believed, however, that Gov. Winthrop told that Gardiner sailed on a Norsey Barque 10 Jul 1635. It is supposed that Thomas Hurlbut was one of the 11 passengers above referred to, but this is not proven.2

In 1637 at Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, Thomas Hurlbut was wounded by Pequot Indians.2 He married Sarah (?) circa 1639.1 Thomas Hurlbut was a clerk of the Train Band in 1640 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.2 He was a blacksmith in 1642 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.2 On 2 March 1642 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, Thomas Hurlbut was fined 40 shillings for encouraging others in taking excessive rates for their ware. It was respited 5 Feb 1643 upon Peter Bassaker's trial to make "nayles" with less loss and cheaper rates.2 He was a constable and grand juror in 1644 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.2,3 He was granted land in 1660 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut; Granted Lot 39, one of the "four score acre lots" in Naubuc (east side of the river) which he afterward sold to Thomas Holister.2 He was granted land on 12 October 1671 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut; Granted 120 acres of land for his services in the Indian Wars.2 He died after 12 October 1671 at Connecticut.1
