Amos Sage¹

Amos Sage was born on 1 July 1722 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.^2,1,3 He was the son of Timothy Sage and Margaret Hurlbut.¹ When Amos Sage 15 years old, he along with his brothers, David (age 19) and Solomon (age 17), chose John Gipson of Middletown to be their guardian on 12 April 1737 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.⁴ He was received into full communion with the church. On 18 April 1742 at the Cromwell Church, Cromwell, Middlesex County, Connecticut.⁵ He married Rebecca Wilcox, daughter of Francis Wilcox and Abigail Graves, on 28 September 1746 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.^1,2 Amos Sage died on 27 June 1759 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at age 36.^6,5,1 He was buried at Cromwell Cemetery, Cromwell, Middlesex County, Connecticut.⁶

Cornell Dowd, son of Cornell Dowd and Eunice Gaylord.^1,4

However, some reliable sources, most notably the New England Historical & Genealogical Register, give his birth date as 14 Aug 1678.² He was the son of David Sage and Mary Wiley.¹ Timothy Sage married Margaret Hurlbut, daughter of John Hurlbut and Mary Deming, on 7 February 1705/6 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.^3,1,4 Timothy Sage died on 18 March 1724/25 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, at age 46.^3,1 He was buried at Cromwell Cemetery, Cromwell, Middlesex County, Connecticut; The tombstone inscription gives the death date as 18 Mar 1727, obviously a mistake.⁵ The inventory of his estate was taken on 23 April 1725 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut; The inventory was taken by John Warner, Jr., Israhiah Wetmore, and John Sage. Administration was granted to Margaret Sage, widow, and John Sage, a brother of said deceased.⁶

David Sage¹

David Sage was born circa 1639 at England or Wales; Winthrop's Medical Journal gives his age as 22 in Feb. 1659/60.^1,2 He appeared in the records of the Quarter Court charged with 2 others for causing 40 shillings damages by "debeyning of swine not according to lawe" on 1 December 1655 at Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was found "not guilty" (David would have been only 16--would he have been a tenant farmer or could this be a father?).³ He was a servant to Andrew Bacon on 20 February 1659/60 at Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.²

David Sage wasgranted land on 30 May 1663 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, The grant reads "a house lot on the other side of the rivulet...on the west side of the highway to Hartford."³ He married Elizabeth Kirby circa February 1664 at Connecticut.^1,3 David Sage was made a freeman in 1667 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.⁴ He married Mary Wiley, daughter of John Wiley and Elizabeth Clough, circa 1671.¹

David Sage left a will on 27 March 1703 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut; Witnesses were John Stow, John Arnold, and Alexander Rollo.⁵ He died on 31 March 1703 at Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.¹ He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.⁶
