James Bartlett was born on 9 December 1836 at White County, Tennessee.1 He was the son of Joseph Bartlett and Martha Thomas.1,2

On 16 September 1850, James Bartlett was living with Joseph Bartlett at Overton County, Tennessee.3

On 20 June 1860, James Bartlett was listed as a household member living with Joseph Bartlett in the 1860 census at Tippah County, Mississippi.4 James Bartlett married Margaret Amelia Creighton, daughter of (?) Creighton and Margaret McGill, on 15 August 1861 at Tippah County, Mississippi.1,5 James Bartlett began military service on 3 March 1862 at Ripley, Tippah County, Mississippi; when he enlisted as a private in Company L, 2nd Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A.6 On 1 July 1863 James Bartlett was captured and taken prisoner of war at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was taken to Fort Delaware, situated on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the river separating Delaware and New Jersey. He spent almost 2 full years there.6,7 On 11 June 1865 James Bartlett was released from prison after taking the oath of allegiance to the United States at Fort Delaware.6

James Bartlett was listed on 12 September 1870 as the head of the household on the census at Tippah County, Mississippi. Also living in this household were Margaret Amelia Bartlett, Molly Jane Bartlett, Mary A. Bartlett, Joseph Thomas Bartlett and Robert H. Bartlett.8 In September 1876 at Tippah County, Mississippi, A. B. Davis filed a suit against him in Circuit Court. The outcome is not known.9 In March 1879 at Tippah County, Mississippi, A. B. Davis filed a suit against John Jasper Plummer, James Bartlett, Newton Moore, F. W. Carpenter and Jacob Sumers in Circuit Court.9

James Bartlett and Mary Lou Holman began living together circa 1880 at Tennessee. No marriage record has ever been found and James' first wife, Margaret, was still alive in 1900. Margaret was called a widow on the census and she lived with her daughter and son-in-law. Family members in Mississippi were aware, however, that James was alive as he visited there occasionally.10,11

James Bartlett was listed as the head of household on the census in 1880 at Tippah County, Mississippi. Also living in the house were his wife, Margaret Amelia Bartlett, his sons, Joseph Thomas Bartlett, Jesse James Bartlett, Robert H. Bartlett and Bates Bartlett, his daughters, Mary A. Bartlett and Margaret Elizabeth Bartlett.12

James Bartlett was listed as the head of household on the census of 11 June 1900 at Warren County, Tennessee. Also living in the house were his wife, Mary Lou Bartlett, his sons, James Bartlett and Felix Beecham Bartlett, his daughters, Rosea C. Bartlett, Florence Bartlett, Mary Belle Bartlett, Martha Helen Bartlett and Lacey Mae Bartlett. Lacey Mae was listed as "unnamed" on the census.11

     On 1 June 1904 at Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee, he submitted a Soldier's Application for Pension based on his service in the Civil War. The application had a questionnaire which was filled out as follows:
     How did you get out of the army? "I was in prison at Ft. Delaware at close of war."
     Did you take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government? "Yes--I had it to do or stay in prison."
     If so, when and under what cirumstances? "June 12th 1865--as stated above."
     Are you married, or have you been married? "Yes"
     If so, what is the size of your family? "Nine in family"
     What are the respective ages of your wife and children? "Wife 42, oldest child 18, next 15, 13, twins 10, next 4 years old."
     To what sex do your children belong? "Two boys, rest girls."
     Are not some of your children able to support you? "No"
     In what business are you now engaged, if any, and what do you earn? "Work at fruit nursery and make 75 cts a day."
     What estate have you in your own right, real and personal, and what is its value? "I have nothing."
     "What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal, and what is its value? "She has nothing."
     How have you derived support for yourself and family for the last five years? "Worked by days. Work for it."
     Do you use intoxicants to any extent? "No."
     How long have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee? "8 years"
     Have you an attorney to look after this application? "No"

     The application was accepted on 28 Oct 1905. He was apparently drawing a sum until the time of death when attorney Ewell T. Weakley, acting for James' son, J. T. Bartlett, wrote a letter on 5 Nov 1926 to the State Pension Board in Nashville, stating that James Bartlett died in Miston, Dyer County, Tennessee at the home of his son, J. T., who paid all the expenses incident to his death and burial. The letter asked that the final pension check be sent to J. T. Bartlett to help with expenses. The file shows the Board of Pension Examiners ordered a check to be sent to J. T. Bartlett of Miston on 6 Nov 1926.6 James Bartlett died on 3 November 1926 at Miston, Dyer County, Tennessee, at age 89.13
