Joseph Montague White was born on 27 January 1843 at Arkansas nor Tennessee.1,3,4 He was the son of (?) White and Nancy (?).2 Joseph Montague White began military service on 26 May 1861 at Baldwyn, Itawamba County, Mississippi, when he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He served as a Private in Co. K, 19th Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers.5 He was captured and taken prisoner of war on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania County, Virginia. An account of that battle is as follows:

Harris directed his men along the McCoull house road toward the end of Ramseur's line. When he drew near the area of the west angle, enemy fire became so heavy that Harris was unable to form a full line of battle. His two regiments [the 16th and the 19th Miss] on the right braved the storm of lead and charged through the smoky haze straight at the bank of fiery orange flashes that marked the Federal position. True to their word, the Mississippians seized a section of works at bayonet point, capturing 200 Federals, and extending the Confederate line closer to the west angle." They secured their grip on the captured works only after hard hand-to-hand combat. It had been raining for five days, and the men of the 19th Miss were soaked to the skin. However, they stayed in these wet trenches and in close contact with the Union troops for over 20 hours from 7:30 a.m. on May 12 until 4:00 a.m. on May 13. Many were captured in the desperate hand-to-hand fighting including most of Company K with their Captain, Thomas J. Rowan..

He was taken to Fort Delaware, Delaware, from the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. June 17, 1864. He was received at Elmira, New York, on Dec 17, 1864.5,6 He ended military service when he was released and gave his Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America on 27 June 1865 at Elmira, Chemung County, New York.5 He married Amanda Melvina Newsom, daughter of Allen Newsom and Mary Johnson, on 6 February 1866 at Tippah County, Mississippi.7

Joseph Montague White was listed as the head of household on the census on 17 June 1880 at Hardeman County, Tennessee. Also living in the house were his wife, Amanda Melvina White, his sons, Thomas Jackson White, John Wesley White and Joel Daniel White, his daughters, Laura Belle White, Nancy White and Julia Ann White.8

Jo. M. White was listed as the head of household on the census of 2 July 1900 at Beat 5, Graham Precinct, Union County, Mississippi. Also living in the house were his wife, Mandy White, his sons, Joel D. White, Willie I. White and John W. White, his daughter, Julia A. White.9 Joseph Montague White was listed in an enumeration of Confederate Soliders and widows in 1907 at Lee County, Mississippi. His information read: J. M. White enlisted Mississippi, Company K, 19th Mississippi Regiment, age 65, year enlisted 1861, soldier.10 He died on 8 January 1909 at Union County, Mississippi, at age 65.1 He was buried at Fairfield Cemetery, Union County, Mississippi.11
